A Room of One’s Own (2023)

Production designer, Gaffer, Set Builder and Videographer

A Room of One’s Own (2023) is a tableau vivant, designed in response to the photographic prompt below.

My set was heavily inspired by the notion of the individual in a state of inertia within an otherwise dynamic metropolitan environment, as expressed within the original photographic prompt. I was heavily inspired by artists Edward Hopper and Henri Cartier-Bresson in my visual communication of this idea.

Adhering to a timeframe and minute budget, I attempted to integrate a metropolitan setting by projecting small cut-outs of a cityscape on a large, white sheet, layering the isolated action of the character in the foreground against this to suggest place and generate more meaning within the image.

A contrast between the rough, grainy textures of the vintage wooden chair and suitcase against clean, modern colours of white and grey and a cold, smooth floor was intended to echo the manner in which modern and vintage aesthetics also appear enmeshed and layered within the original photograph.

Finally, the central character in my work is pictured wearing clothes that mimic the aesthetic of the curtains which surround her and periodically invade her space. This was a response to the manner in which the character appears in the original photograph, as she appears both isolated within and consumed by her environment.
